Homework

School and district policies require homework and outside reading on a regular basis. Each teacher has a Homework Policy for his/her classroom that meets these requirements. Your child will bring home a copy of the Homework Policy for his or her classroom during the first few weeks of school.

Homework for K-5

Reading daily at home (20 minutes minimum)

  • We want students to practice reading (stamina). Finding a nice place at home to enjoy the book they are currently reading is a great way to honor that time.

Mathematics review

  • Math homework should only be work that they have already reviewed in class or a practice/skilled test. Speak with your child's teacher on what math concept is being taught for the month.

Home writing in their journal (assigned topics or freewrite)

  • In 2011-2012 we wanted students to begin the practice and stamina of writing on their own daily. The minimum is a page. its to build up writing fluency. Kindergarteners are initial writing in developmental spelling form but by the end of the year they are developing stories. We have seen incredible growth in our students this year. it is the best form of seeing what kids know and need to work on with language. The next phase is to continue the work and extend on it.
